At work, we are asked to make adjustments all the time. In our modern, technological jobs, we are constantly facing change. The individuals and teams who will succeed are the ones who’ve gotten comfortable with it. They’ve prepared for the change and know they can adjust on the fly because they know the work well and are used to making the proper decisions. Those who don’t have a deep understanding of what is going on will overreact to change and commit turnovers.
She mentions a round of layoffs as an example of breaking trust, and I’m glad she included that. All too often, when a round of layoffs occurs, senior management will return to talking about the culture or set of core values they expect all employees to follow without ever acknowledging that it’s different now. You can’t just return to talking about the importance of teamwork and diversity when you just canned 10% of the team as if nothing happened.
Let me repeat what I’ve said before. If you are in an abusive situation and your partner has had access to your phone, leave it behind. If you suspect any of your devices had these tools installed, do not take any chances with them. Yes, getting a new phone and changing all of your passwords will be a pain in the ass. It will suck to set up a new email and change the default email address for all of your online accounts.
It still beats getting tracked down by a violent ex-partner. Do not make light of this. This is life and death stuff. Trying to remove stalker ware incorrectly might kill people. It shouldn’t be that way, but it is. Don’t take the chance.
No one wants a boss when they deserve a leader.
I know some young folks. I work with some young folks. The stereotype that the younger generations don’t want to work is false, in my opinion. What they don’t want to do is work the same way we have for ages because they recognize that it’s not a sound system.
Every poor manager I’ve ever dealt with has been a poor communicator. Almost every shortcoming or problem I’ve seen people have with a manager or coworker could be filed under a problem with communication. It’s THE thing in the workplace. Ideas, expectations, priorities, and everything else in the workplace come down to the ability to communicate. If you cannot communicate clearly, you are lost, and the people who work for you or lost.
Yet how many organizations promote the top performer or their most senior individual contributor without ever considering whether they are good communicators? And how many prioritize teaching them how to communicate as managers?
