How Much Would a Government Shutdown Give Hackers a Leg Up?

    ByMike McBride September 27, 2023September 27, 2023 Reading Time: 1 minute

As he points out, if nothing else, it simply slows down the work CISA is doing in comparison to the work bad actors can, and will, be doing. If we consider how much of a race it is to keep up with the opposition in this fight, being slowed down by politics sucks.

    Linked – Expectations Debt

    ByMike McBride September 26, 2023September 26, 2023 Reading Time: 2 minutes

The term Expectation Debt fits a lot of what I was talking about earlier this year. This is a paragraph about Amazon, but you could write the same thing about Microsoft, Google, Zoom, and many other tech companies.

Expectations were so high in 2021 that investors and employees had to achieve extraordinary things just to break even. When results were merely good, they felt terrible.

Linked – Microsoft leaks 38TB of private data via unsecured Azure storage

    ByMike McBride September 19, 2023September 18, 2023 Reading Time: 1 minute

As the article mentions, Microsoft does not make it easy to manage SAS tokens in bulk. It’s pretty easy to have a bunch of Azure data blob storage items lying around for years with active SAS tokens that were totally forgotten about.

If you’re using SAS tokens to share data, and it’s good for that, remember to clean up after yourself.

Should Everyone Be Passive Job Seeking?

    ByMike McBride September 16, 2023September 16, 2023 Reading Time: 2 minutes

Those are essentially the same steps I would recommend for anyone wanting to network in our industry. Get active in places where Legal Tech folks gather, like LinkedIn, conferences, and networking groups, and volunteer to be a part of some of those same groups. Whether that networking is for career opportunities or just to be connected with people in the field and share tips and information, that’s what I would do.

So, if those actions are what passive job-seeking looks like, we should all be passive job-seeking.

The Mental Health Impacts of Being New to the Workplace

    ByMike McBride September 15, 2023September 14, 2023 Reading Time: 2 minutes

There should be no question about how to access resources. There should be an expectation that there are people you can reach out to who would help you navigate those resources and that managers are supportive of basic mental health activities that help avoid burnout.

Anything less just isn’t good enough.

Training at Work is Not Like School

    ByMike McBride September 14, 2023September 13, 2023 Reading Time: 2 minutes

Do we approach training from a “just in case” mindset, where we teach employees everything they might need to know before we get them started doing any productive work, or should we be approaching it from a “just in time” mindset, where they continuously learn new skills as they are needed?
