Of All The Bad Management Advice I’ve Seen….

    ByMike McBride November 7, 2020November 7, 2020 Reading Time: 1 minute

I’m not sure if the authors take on this study is the worst managerial advice I’ve ever seen, but surely it’s right up there, right? Want to Get More Productivity Out of Your People? Try Yelling at Them. Yes it’s true. There was a study that showed how basketball teams perform better in the second…

Linked: Talking About Mental Health with Your Employees — Without Overstepping

    ByMike McBride November 5, 2020November 4, 2020 Reading Time: 2 minutes

Or as I would put it, if you don’t even know my wife’s name, or can’t remember that I don’t have kids, maybe start there before you ask about my mental health, cool?

Suddenly asking someone you barely know anything about outside of work about mental health, will be a shock, and quite frankly, will seem threatening more than it seems supportive. As in, “why is my boss asking about this? Does she think I’m not doing my job, am I about to get fired?”

I’m assuming that’s not how you want them to feel, so be thoughtful about how you bring these subjects up. By all means, work up to it, and work up toward helping your reports feel comfortable, but do it in a way that actually works, not in a way that makes them feel less safe.

    ByMike McBride November 2, 2020November 1, 2020 Reading Time: 2 minutes

This is in New York City, so I think we know this is probably even worse in other cities around the US, right? “Unsurprisingly, New Yorkers with lower incomes are more likely to lack high-speed internet access: a 2019 study by comptroller Scott Stringer’s office found that 44% of New Yorkers in poverty have no…

Linked: Companies are just now starting to figure out remote work

    ByMike McBride October 31, 2020October 31, 2020 Reading Time: 2 minutes

It’s the rethink that some leaders are struggling with, isn’t it? “Council said company leaders need to be very aware of the high potential for disconnection among employees. “Many of the leaders have leveraged proximity, versus really thinking about how they lead, how they engage, how they create a culture, and how they maintain a…

Linked: New Research: Jargon Is a Sign of Insecurity, Not Smarts

    ByMike McBride October 30, 2020October 30, 2020 Reading Time: 1 minute

“The more worried people are about their status, the more buzzwords they use.” Man, the Legal Technology industry must be full of some of the most insecure people in the world, no? Personally, I think it is, and I think it’s mostly because truly understanding this stuff is hard, and understanding anything well enough to…
