BartPE

Today’s column by Fred Langa is the second recent reference I’ve seen to BartPE:

Bart’s PE Builder helps you build a “BartPE” (Bart Preinstalled Environment) bootable Windows CD-Rom or DVD from the original Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 installation/setup CD, very suitable for PC maintenance tasks.

It will give you a complete Win32 environment with network support, a graphical user interface (800×600) and FAT/NTFS/CDFS filesystem support. Very handy for burn-in testing systems with no OS, rescuing files to a network share, virus scan and so on.
This will replace any Dos bootdisk in no time!

Sounds like an interesting tool to check out, or at least have handy for when you need to grab data off a drive that won’t boot any longer. 🙂

For the record, the first reference was from Kevin Devin.

I found the source of the spyware, took me awhile to track it but fantasy baseball message boards came to the rescue. I had a feeling that if the problem existed on that site, and I just wasn’t seeing it, that those fantasy baseball folks would be talking about it. Apparently the ads I got…

  • More syncing Firefox across computers

Looks like Google is getting into the Firefox extension that lets you keep your bookmarks, settings, cookies, etc. synchronized across computers. The only difference here is that your information is kept on Google’s servers, encrypted of course so that only you would have the key to access it. I’m not sure I like the idea…
