Looks like I wasn’t the only one trying out Knoppix yesterday. Library Planet had this to say:

This goes way beyond DemoLinux. I stuck the CD in, re-booted, and had to hit enter one time to get it started. It identified all the hardware with no user intervention and booted right up.

Thanks to a tip from Joy I found that I can’t exactly just hit enter at startup to get it to identify all the hardware in my machine but typing “knoppix alsa lang=us” at the boot prompt is hardly putting me out. The alsa module finds and loads the onboard audio drivers, and the lang=us sets the keyboard language to English/US. Apparently the default is German, although you’ll only notice the difference if you try and type “=”. At least that’s what someone in the forums on the Knoppix site said. 🙂

Interesting observation about using Help by Jensen Harris today: One of the most interesting epiphanies I’ve had over the last few years seems on the surface like a paradox: “help” in Office is mostly used by experts and enthusiasts. How can this be? I think my biased assumption was that experts know how to use…

OK not really, it is Monday after all! But I figured I’d let you all in on the latest news surrounding this site. First, in old news the site for That Hosting Company is online again, with the simple message that there is a “Server Update in Progress, please check back in 60 minutes”. That…

  • Reading with my coffee

Finally a day without fires to put out, maybe I can get caught up on the tech happenings around the ‘net this week: Windows 2000 SP3 is available. As Josh says in his pointer to it, there’s not much info on exactly what it does, so I’ll be following my normal “wait and let someone…

  • Ohio…

I saw on the news where they think the big blackout started somewhere near Cleveland. Now, as any good Ohio resident can tell you, Cleveland fully deserved it’s nickname (the mistake on the lake) long before this event occurred, but it somehow does seem fitting, doesn’t it? BTW, some of the reasons Cleveland is known…
