Your best advice?

I have been in contact with some one who is interested in starting a tech blog. It’s all very hush-hush for now, since he hasn’t actually started it, but he was asking my best advice as far as getting it out there and having it noticed. My advice was first to write what he knows, and this person has quite a bit of tech knowledge. Second, to link ALOT to other people, generating traffic to their blogs is the best way to get them to notice you. (Let’s face it, we’re all egotistical enough to want to see what someone said about us in the link, right?) Third, visit the blogs of other tech people and leave thoughtful, informed comments, so they get used to seeing you and get an idea that you know what you’re talking about.

My overall strategy would have him work hard at being part of the overall tech-blog community and building from there. What would your advice be? Any “tricks of the trade” you would care to share?

Seems like while I was sleeping away my migraine, (I’m much better now, thanks for the well-wishes Meryl!) that I didn’t miss much today, eh? I did pick up a new system over the weekend, an AMD K7 1.4Ghz, 256MB PC133 RAM, 30GB Maxtor HDD, 10/100 NIC, 32MB shared Video RAM (really not that big a deal for what this machine is used for) for $299. The big selling point for this particular vendor was the 5 year warranty and…

  • Bloglines subscribers

Sometime over the weekend, the number of people who subscribe to this blog using Bloglines hit 100. Now, I realize that isn’t a big total compared to some other places, however the significance of it, for me, is that is just about the same number of actual visits to the page on a daily basis….

Maybe “toughing it out until 5” wasn’t the best idea I’ve ever had. In my weakened mental state I think I just agreed to do some on-the-side consulting work for an organization that I’m not all that fond of dealing with as part of my regular job! Oh well, it’s one machine, a couple of…
